Energy Reduction Challenge

Congratulations to all of our 2013 participants! Check out these remarkable results:

The 2nd graders at Highland Park Elementary School in St. Paul received the highest overall score on the scorecard – 85%!

North Shore Community School in Duluth had the highest participation percentage among their students and staff! Check out their awesome video on our Facebook page.

Ms. Pesek’s 3rd grade class at Linwood Elementary School in Forest Lake developed a relationship with their custodian who noted that in his 20+ years of working at the school no one had ever shown interest in this part of his job!

Great work all!

In 2013, MN Green Schools Coalition partnered with Minnesota Energy Challenge, Class 5 Energy, Hallberg Engineering, Trane and other leaders in energy reduction strategies to host an Energy Reduction Challenge among Minnesota elementary school students. The challenge is a fun, hands-on opportunity for students to garner awareness and affect positive change for our environment and their school.

Challenge Structure: Student led “Green Teams” organize an awareness campaign at their school which meets the following requirements:

  • K-6 Green Team (at least 10 students per team, we recommend one on-site adult lead for each green team)
  • Students complete an energy challenge scorecard to keep record of their efforts to reduce their energy consumption (found in the toolkit, above)
